PreCollege programs provide high school students with rigorous college level art, design and creative thinking courses, modeled after Pratt Institute’s undergraduate offerings. Classes are taught by Pratt faculty who are committed to sharing their expertise in the fields of art and design. Students enrolled in credit bearing PreCollege classes receive elective credits accepted at Pratt and most colleges and universities. Participating students will have the opportunity to:

  • Explore the possibility of studying art, design, architecture, creative writing, or critical and visual studies at the college level.
  • Confirm that this is the subject you want to study in college.
  • Develop your skills through college-level coursework, using a variety of tools, materials, and techniques.
  • Develop a body of work for your portfolio for admission to college.
  • Meet other students who share your interests.
  • Get a preview of the college experience.


Fall and Spring Programs
Manhattan Campus

Fall and spring classes are designed for commuter high school students living in the New York City area, who wish to further studies in art, design, and creative thinking. Class offerings are modeled after Pratt’s undergraduate offerings and include but are not limited to Architecture, Art and Design Discovery, Digital Illustration, Digital Imaging and Photography, Fiction Writing, Fine Arts (Painting and Drawing), Foundation of Art and Design, Graphic Design, Industrial Design, Interior Design, and Portfolio Development.

Program courses meet once a week and range from six-week non-credit workshops, nine-week non-credit classes to twelve-week two credit classes.

Classes take place at Pratt Manhattan located at 144 West 14 Street, between 6th and 7th Avenues.

Summer Program

Brooklyn Campus

Every summer, Pratt sponsors a college-level program for high school sophomores, juniors and seniors at its Brooklyn campus. The program attracts about 400 students, both domestic and international. It is an intensive immersion experience in art, design, architecture, or creative writing.

Students choose an elective course such as fine arts/painting and drawing, graphic design, illustration (traditional or digital), fashion design, photography, architecture, cultural studies, or creative writing. Students develop their creative skills, build an effective portfolio for college admission, and earn four college credits. Scholarships are available based on merit.

Upstate NY PreCollege Summer Program

PrattMWP, an extension campus of Pratt Institute, is located in the midst of Central New York’s “Cultural Corridor” in Utica, N.Y. With its modern studios, classrooms, and new residence halls, it provides the optimum learning and living environment for aspiring young artists in urban, yet intimate setting for students who prefer the more tranquil Upstate atmosphere. PrattMWP is one part of an internationally recognized fine arts center; Museum of Art, Performing Arts, and School of Art. Pre-College elective courses offered by PrattMWP include: Painting and Drawing, Illustration, Jewelry/Metal Arts, Photography, Sculpture, and Graphic Design.
